Configuration Manager Job Requirements

Configuration Manager is a stakeholder in the IT service and infrastructure management process of an organization and is responsible for defining and operating the configuration management process and system of an organization. He/she ensures a coordinated approach to configurations and parameterizations of IT assets that drive business systems, processes and services within an organization. To achieve this, the Configuration Manager creates and maintains a configuration management system primarily for the capturing of configuration items (CIs) (known as collection of IT assets) and other supporting information into a database called configuration management database (CMDB). A CMDB provides an organized view of configuration information of IT assets and their dependencies. CMDB simply serves as an inventory of information technology assets configurations and parameterizations with detailed relationships between such assets. With the CMDB, the Configuration Manager have visibility on configurations performed on technology assets of interest and can use same to track changes or identify problems/faults affecting an asset (CI) or group of assets (CIs) that are traceable to other CI(s). Configuration Manager can use historic data in the CMDB to determine impact of a change on a configuration item (CI) or group of dependent CIs in addition to performing root cause analysis of faults or problems to identify their source(s) and impact not just on a CI but other related/dependent CIs or assets.

To be endorsed as an Configuration Manager, practitioners must acquire certification such ITIL Foundation, Practitioner, Intermediate, Expert or Master Certifications by Axelos, ISO 20000 (IT Service Management System) certification by ISO/IEC, COBIT 5 Foundation and Implementer certification by ISACA, Configuration Management certifications by CMII Research Institute and National Defense Industry Association (NDIA), Configuration Management Process Improvement Center certification by University of Houston, Texas, among others.
